Sustainability

Sustainability is defined as a characteristic of processes that are meeting humanity’s needs without harming future generations. Unfortunately, achieving sustainability through out the supply chain is very difficult. Now there are three parts to supply chain sustainability and they are financial responsibility, environmental responsibility and social responsibility. Walgreens is a pretty good example of how a company can make supply chain changes in order to meet social responsibility. For example, in collaboration with Red Cross, Walgreens was able to collect funds for Hurricane Maria relief. Another example, is Walgreens holds an annual event in May known as Red Nose Day. On Red Nose Day this special event is live broadcasted on the Good Morning America show. The purpose of Red Nose Day is to collect funds for children who live in poverty here in the U.S. To collect funds and bring awareness Walgreens sells “red nose day” items such as t-shirts, red noses, and customers can simply make a donation for the cause at the registers. Another way in which Walgreens is socially responsible, is it asks for donations for all different types of causes. For example, during the month of October, at the register pin pads, a donation suggestion will pop up for customers to decide how much they want to donate.
